Students discuss Poster Invasion and how they express themselves through decoration.

0:06: Welcome back to Chronversations.
0:08: I’m your host, Cameron Johnson.
0:10: With the school you’re starting off, and with many people becoming well acquainted with the dorms, many students aim to show their creative sides even more by spicing up the rooms a bit.
0:19: For today’s episode, I interviewed students who are attending the Poster Sale, happening in the student center, provided by a company named Poster Invasion.
0:28: My name is Mattie Theune.
0:30: I use he/they.
0:31: I’m a junior film and television major here at Columbia.
0:33: My name is Sadie Eichenberger.
0:35: My major is illustration and my pronouns are she/her.
0:39: On a scale from 1 to 10, how decorative would you say you are?
0:42: I feel like a solid 9 or 9.5.
0:46: I feel like there’s definitely more I could do, but I definitely, especially in my rooms and stuff, try to curate my walls and try to make it as much like me as possible.
0:56: You would say your walls are packed with posters or how?
1:01: I’m working on my apartment right now that I just moved into, so I don’t have everything I want up.
1:09: But my room back home, up in Wisconsin, my walls, I have no more space for anything.
1:14: It is curated with Polaroids, posters, tapestries, flags and I just have everything.
1:19: Everything has its own little spot, and I’m slowly working on that with my room here, so one of my walls is completely full of posters already.
1:27: I’m a pretty decorative person.
1:28: I’d say, compared to a lot of the people I’ve met here at Columbia, I’m not the most decorative person, but I definitely don’t have a blank space in my living area.
1:44: That’s nice.
1:44: Yeah, I’ve been telling people, ‘cause I could say on my own scale it’s probably a 3.
1:51: I need to get better.
1:52: But what would you say is your go-to style for poster art, you know, as you were walking through, what is your go-to style?
1:59: I don’t really know,
2:00: I feel like a lot of things that are warm tones.
2:02: I love things that make my room feel more homey, things like that.
2:09: I always love a good Five Below poster.
2:11: I have a lot of those and they’re cheap and a lot of them look good.
2:16: I think for me, a lot of them are just shows and movies or other things like that.
2:23: I have a lot of Spiderman and Gravity Falls, Grateful Dead, just a lot of posters that kind of emulate a more naturey style I really enjoy.
2:35: And yeah, that’s just kind of the vibe I go for.
2:38: I typically am very art-oriented, character oriented, I’m really into film and TV. My goal with illustration is to sort of go into behind the scenes film stuff and work in After Effects and so
3:02: I’m really into film and Letterboxd, so I decorate a lot of my space with movie posters and, and then pictures of my family and stuff, so this poster sale is really fun for me because there’s all these movie posters of movies that I’ve loved for years and so this is fun because I have no idea what I’m gonna get.
3:26: So I see that you bought a poster.
3:29: Can you describe it? Just for the people to visualize for the podcast.
3:32: I got one of them that is more like an older map of the world and stuff with a lot of older Renaissance paintings kind of circling around it, just a lot to look at, and I really like the style of it.
3:43: It’s just a nice thing to look at when I’m bored.
3:46: You can’t get bored looking at that one.
3:49: And the other one I got is one of the cat posters, I’m also a big animal fan, and it’s just one of two cats that are kind of in a koi pond, and just the nature scenery and the style of it all, I really enjoy. So I think it’ll be a nice addition to the poster wall I’m building right now.
4:06: I see that you have one poster in your hand so far.
4:09: You’re planning to, probably, get multiple, right?
4:12: But with the one that you have so far, could you just describe what it is? Just for the people.
4:16: Actually, the one in my hand right now isn’t even for me, it’s for my little brother.
4:20: He’s 14.
4:22: I’ve actually been texting my dad all morning because my little brother is in this phase, he’s obsessed with music right now.
4:30: But I don’t know what music he’s into, but for a long time he was really into Kendrick Lamar and then really into Tyler the Creator, and now he’s really into Mac Miller.
4:43: So I have a Mac Miller collage.
4:47: Oh that’s fire.
4:48: Yeah, it’s fire.
4:49: It’s really cool, so it’s gonna be his birthday present.
4:54: His birthday is in November, so I’m getting it for him.
4:57: Yeah, well, that’s nice.
4:58: That’s gonna be a great gift for your brother.
5:00: The creativity that one shows can be expressed in many different ways.
