Former President Joe Biden made his first major public address since leaving presidency in Chicago, stressing threats that the Trump administration has made towards the Social Security Administration.
The former president spoke at the national conference of Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled in Chicago at the Sofitel in Chicago on Tuesday, April 15.
As Trump has launched efforts to shrink the federal government and make it more efficient, some social security recipients fear this will lead to cuts in benefits.
In 2025, the Social Security Administration is expected to pay benefits to an average of almost 69 million Americans per month. Disabled workers make up over 7 million of those people.
These benefits include retirement, disability and survivor benefits. The total amount of benefits paid out during the year is estimated to be around $1.6 trillion.
