A control tower at the O’Hare International Airport looks over Resthaven Cemetery, situated in the middle of O’Hare airport, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. The cemetery remains untouched while St. Johannes Cemetery was relocated, and a runway was consequently built on top of it. It was a grave undertaking for the city to ensure a respectful relocation of a burial site that had nearly 1,500 graves in 2013. This photo is part of the Columbia Chronicle’s “77 Community Areas” project, documenting Chicago in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
