Illinois voters elected Democrat Juliana Stratton to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, Nov. 3. She will be the second Black woman from Illinois to serve in the chamber, following Carol Moseley Braun, who made history in 1992 as the first Black woman elected to the Senate.
Stratton will join Sen. Tammy Duckworth, making Illinois the first state represented by two women of color in the Senate.
Gov. JB Pritzker also won a historic third term, while Democrat La Shawn Ford won the 7th Congressional District seat, succeeding longtime U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, who is retiring.
The Illinois results were confirmed shortly after the polls closed at 7 p.m.
Nationally, Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, flipping the House and Senate in a sweeping rebuke to President Donald Trump.
The last time Democrats took control of both chambers in a midterm election was 2006, when voters turned against President George W. Bush and his party after the invasion of Iraq.
