00:00:26 Greer Stewart: This week, we’re talking about Peer Connections, an LGBTQ + history tour of North Halsted.
00:00:34 Greer Stewart: the new community connections drop-in support group
00:00:37 Greer Stewart: and the “Un Debates” a discussion on immigration.
00:00:45 Greer Stewart: To kick off the start of Queer History Month Peer Connections coordinator Matt Rillie took students on a tour of some of the historic spots of North Halsted.
00:00:54 Greer Stewart: Some of the spots included Unabridged Bookstore, the Center on North Halsted and Memorials from the Legacy Walk.
00:01:01 Rillie: I intentionally plan a lot of these trips so people can experience Chicago in a way that’s beyond just the South Loop but with the lens of, you know, we’re coming here because this is where some of the work that we do on campus lives out beyond us. RC 2:08
00:01:16 Greer Stewart: The tour serves to engage and educate students on activists who have pushed for change for LGBTQ + communities.
00:01:28 Greer Stewart: Beginning October 2nd,
00:01:30 Greer Stewart: The Center for Student Wellbeing is offering community connections, a drop-in support group in room 304 on 623 South Wabash.
00:01:39 Greer Stewart: The new decompression space serves as a safe, informal place to connect with others and chat with a licensed therapist.
00:01:46 Greer Stewart: Coffee, tea, snacks and crafts will be provided to those who would like to participate.
00:01:52 Greer Stewart: Community Connections will be available every Wednesday throughout the semester from 5 to 6 p.m.
00:02:01 Greer Stewart: The final panel for the Un Debates took place at Columbia College’s Film Row Cinema.
00:02:06 Greer Stewart: The event explored immigration debates with topics ranging from navigating the immigration system to the social impact of immigration policies.
00:02:16 Cardona-Maguidad: All these anti-immigrant messages coming to you from just different corners in all these other debates but like in the news, etc. RC 1:10
00:02:25 Cardona-Maguidad: And I would just say it creates a lot of tension.
00:02:30 Cardona-Maguidad: I definitely feel that this, this election season a lot more.
00:02:34 Cardona-Maguidad: When I speak with the residents who are mostly on the South and West side communities, who are threatened by all these resources going away or not having enough resources,
00:02:45 Cardona-Maguidad: I understand their frustrations.
00:02:47 Greer Stewart: Though this is the final installment for the Un Debates, many other election-forward events will take place prior to the election, including Rev Up the Vote on Wednesday, October 9 from 5 to 8 p.m.
