Welcome to the Three C’s with the Columbia Chronicle, your go-to source for the top three things every Columbia College student, faculty and staff member needs to know this week.
00:15
We are here to bring you credible information about our campus and provide the clarity you need on the issues that matter most.
00:24
I’m your host, Greer Stewart.
00:27
This week, we’re talking about generative AI, AI, AI tools being used to detect AI.
00:32
The impact of artificial intelligence on students.
00:36
AI has had increasing impacts for students, not only on campus, but all over the world.
00:42
Here are some of the highlights from events that took place this past week.
00:51
Last week, we reported on the School of Visual Arts posting a flier that used generative AI promoting an annual pancake breakfast.
00:58
On September 18, an apology was sent out to illustration majors, faculty and staff from the interim director, Duncan MacKenzie, expressing remorse for the error.
01:10
The promotional poster was generated as a quick solution due to the absence of a student aid worker position for the school.
01:20
The Career Center hosted a workshop designed to teach students about how to enhance cover letters and resumes with the aid of AI.
01:28
The event titled “Using AI in Your Job Search” was overseen by School of Design career advisor Justin Finkelman.
01:36
Aside from resume building, the workshop also included interactive elements to help students brainstorm and refine their experiences.
01:44
I think a lot of students think of AI as you know, a tool to really just do things for them, right and like. We don’t want that.
01:54
We want students to learn how to make a good resume.
01:58
If you missed out on this event, the Career Center hosts weekly workshops and opportunities through the Engage portal.
02:04
The next workshop for “Using AI in Your Job Search” will be on October 25.
02:13
Hello, everyone. I am Brian Cheung and welcome to the AI Generation: a Student Innovation Summit. We are coming to you live from Columbia College Chicago in the heart of the Windy City. Give it up. One of the leading technology hubs…
02:27
NBCU Academy hosted a free hybrid student innovation summit in partnership with Columbia, allowing students a chance to connect with NBCU executives and each other.
02:38
The summit kicked off with an in-person networking event, featuring special remarks from alumni and early career opportunities, three live panels followed, discussing the impact of AI on work, as a tool and with journalism.
02:52
Top industry leaders spoke on their experiences in using AI throughout their careers, while providing practical, hands-on demonstrations and guidance.
03:01
While each panel highlighted the importance of using AI to aid with the flow of tasks, challenges such as ethical guidelines and critical thinking were also addressed.
03:11
We know how to hone and harness it. We know how to put regulation and checkpoints into our processes, in our newsrooms, this actually can be a good thing, and it’s one of those things where the technology is so far ahead of us, we’re not going to be able to put the toothpaste back into the tube.
03:25
The world of artificial intelligence poses a great opportunity for revolutionizing the way students work, though it is important to use caution as AI still remains an ever changing industry.
