TRANSCRIPT:
0:08: Welcome to Chronicle Chronversations.
0:11: I’m your guest host Sydney Richardson.
0:15: Fall RegFest is underway as students prepare to select classes for next semester.
0:21: The event connects students with academic advisors who can answer their questions about course requirements.
0:28: This semester’s RegFest comes after the college has laid off academic advising staff, reduced core requirements
0:36: and as they are making changes to majors. The event runs at the Student Center through Thursday.
0:43: My name is Ellie Mickey,
0:44: I’m a vocal performance major and I’m a junior.
0:46: I honestly had no idea RegFest was happening, but I’m glad it is because I now get to see whether I have an academic hold or not.
0:53: I work upstairs,
0:54: so I was just coming in for work, but pleasant surprise, and now I get a free lunch if I fill out this cool piece of paper.
1:02My name’s Greg Foster-Rice. I’m a faculty member who teaches in the photo program here. I am also the associate provost for Student Retention Initiatives.
1:08: So RegFest is celebration of preparing to register and it is an opportunity for students to get some of the steps done before registration officially opens the week of November 11th, we want to make sure everybody gets their holds cleared, knows what their actual date is for registration and then also what classes they think that they want to take so that when the schedule opens, they can go right in and take care of everything as quickly as possible.
1:31: So when students come in, they will talk to the advising table, get some information about courses that they may want to take, talk to make sure that they’ve got sort of contact, maybe sign up with individual one-on-one office hours with someone from advising.
1:45: They’re also going to go to Columbia Central, ask them to double check if they’ve got any holds, if they do have any holds, either financial or immunization, set up an appointment to figure out exactly how to take care of that because we know that’s kind of stressful.
1:57: Oftentimes there are little things, a little bit of paperwork, but we want to just sort of lower the threshold and the burden of getting that done.
2:02: And then there are also student organizations, clubs, opportunities for study abroad which are just kind of extracurricular or cocurricular activities that enhance your experience and you want students to fill out what are some things that you want to try and do?
2:15: My name is Sabrina Alejandre.
2:17: I’m currently a junior here and I’m a double major,
2:20: my majors are ASL-English Interpretation and also marketing and digital media strategies.
2:26: I would say what made me come to RegFest was just making sure I had all of my classes for next semester set.
2:32: I know it can be really stressful.
2:34: Definitely being a double major I say has made the registration process a little bit more stressful just because you have to worry about double the load now.
2:46: So it’s like knowing what classes you’re taking like what requirements for each major, you have to keep track of everything but times two now.
3:01 I’m Sydney Richardson, thanks for listening to Chronicle Chronversations.
