This week on Chronversation’s: As we head into election season, 50 wards around Chicago have early voting access. Also, the student Student Diversity and Inclusion office offers a tour around the historic Northhalsted neighborhood.

For campus news this week, early voting in Chicago opened on Thursday, October 3rd at 9 a.m. for the 2024 presidential election and is located at Chicago Supersite at 191 North Clark Street, as well as the CBO offices at 69 West Washington Street.

Citywide early voting will then begin on October 21st for all of Chicago’s 50 wards allowing early voting in nearly all Chicago neighborhoods, not just downtown. All early voting sites will provide additional voter registration services such as services for new voters, name changes and address updates.

In other news, coordinator of student support at the Student Diversity and Inclusion office, Matthew Riley, gave students a tour of the historic North Halsted neighborhood on Tuesday, October 1st in honor of LGBT history month.

Riley serves as a coordinator at the SDI office creating events that aim to offer connections between students at Columbia.

The tour began at the Unabridged Bookstore where students were able to visit a premier LGBTQ+ literature hub with an award winning children’s section.

Students were then able to visit a comprehensive community center that offers free supplementary care such as free hepatitis C and HIV testing as well as workshops for LGBTQ+ students around Chicago.

Students were also given the option to participate in a self-guided tour of the Legacy Walk, an outdoor LGBTQ+ history exhibit featuring bronze memorials dedicated to LGBTQ+ figures throughout history such as James Baldwin, Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo and more.

The North Halstead tour concluded with the Walk with Pride art tour highlighting the “Wings of Pride” mural located at the intersection of Halstead and Roscoe Street.
