Basics, micro-mini’s and textures galore: What to wear this spring season
May 11, 2022
Gone are the gloomy, bitter-cold days of winter, ushering a breath of fresh air into closets.
Last year, the warmer months brought bold and daring pieces, symbolic of the world’s slow return back to “normal,” with meshed upcycled patterns and textures along with crochet tops and contrast-stitched jeans.
This season takes those similar trends with a slightly updated twist, namely the corset-turned-bodysuit, which Treyson Redmond, a senior public relations major and senior stylist at Aritzia, said is a staple piece. Redmond added that a good bodysuit is an option he always proposes to clients who are looking for the newest addition to their wardrobes.
At Aritzia, Redmond said while the bodysuits are a year-round staple piece, tank-top and bandeau-versions are flying off the shelves in celebration of the warmer months. As for bottoms, their Effortless pant is the perfect mix of comfort, breathability and coverage, with a blend of linen and cotton fabric. With varying silhouettes, these wide-leg pants can wear an elastic waistband, a shorter cut or less pleating in the front.
For this season, Redmond said Aritzia brought back some fan favorites and a new palette of colors. Gem-toned shades and muted pastels accompany both old and new silhouettes, such as their Sculp Knit line and more off-the-shoulder styles. Some classics were revamped with their revival, like the vegan leather Wilfred Rebel pant now having its original knee stitch removed and a slightly less-tapered shape.
Redmond said a staple shoe will be a pair of white sneakers. Redmond also recommends outfits be topped off with yellow-gold jewelry to elevate people’s summer tans.
Haleigh Winterbauer, a junior social media digital strategies major, has worked at Old Navy for four years and said the experience has taught her how to observe trends evolving and changing — both in general and within her store.
“A specific piece that’s been viral on TikTok is this activewear bodysuit,” Winterbauer said. “That’s been pretty popular. … We have some baby doll style dresses in women’s, so people have been really loving those, and some of the maxi dresses as well have really been in.”
Apart from the empire-waist-styled tops, Old Navy’s pull from Y2K-inspired looks goes into its saturated color palette of vibrant reds and bright pinks. On the flip side, Winterbauer said their basics include classic Bermuda shorts, tiered sundresses and their staple chino-style material.
Winterbauer said she is most looking forward to wearing a mix of denims and bringing color back into her outfits in the upcoming months.
“I’m really excited to wear colorful sundresses — like bright pinks, blues, yellows and greens. I’m just really excited for that spring color palette,” Winterbauer said.
