Born into fame: celebrities and pregnancy

With a life in the spotlight, it’s a struggle to keep anything under wraps. When a person becomes famous, the line between public and private becomes blurred, but a public figure should be allowed to live a normal life, if they choose, without being judged.

After keeping her life private for nine months, Kylie Jenner broke the silence by issuing a heartfelt statement on her social media platforms Feb. 4, addressing her pregnancy rumors.

“My pregnancy was one I chose not to do in front of the world,” Jenner wrote. “I knew for myself I needed to prepare for the role of a lifetime in the most positive, stress free, and healthy way I knew how.”

It comes as no surprise that Jenner was pregnant. With rumors circling since early September, Jenner did not comment until after the Feb. 1 birth of her baby girl, Stormi. For someone who has lived her whole life in the spotlight, it is a powerful statement for the makeup mogul to hide in the dark for so long.

Jenner’s sudden disappearance from the world was due to a fear of the negativity she would endure had she gone public with the news. According to a Feb. 5 People article, Jenner was not ready for the news to come out because she knew she would be judged and scrutinized for being so young.

Although she was hidden from the public eye, Jenner still made it a point to document her entire pregnancy, releasing a tear-jerking YouTube video moments after her written post. This helped fans to reconnect with the star, making it seem as if they were on this journey with her.

Other celebrities including Chrissy Teigen, Behati Prinsloo and Khloé Kardashian are also expecting. However, they have expressed and portrayed their pregnancies differently, in ways that are more comfortable to them.

Teigen and husband John Legend are expecting their second child. Teigen announced her pregnancy with an Instagram video, in which she asked her daughter, Luna, what is in her belly. Luna proceeded to answer “Baby.” Since then, Teigen has posted photos of her growing belly in glamorous evening gowns at the Grammy’s.

Prinsloo and husband Adam Levine are also expecting their second child. Prinsloo has taken advantage of social media, posting photos of her growing belly.

Expecting their first child, Khloé Kardashian and Cleveland Cavaliers player Tristan Thompson have been very open throughout the process of her pregnancy. Beginning as a rumor, Kardashian avoided the accusations until she felt she was ready to share the news. She addressed the rumor with a Dec. 20, 2017, Instagram photo of her and Thompson’s hands holding her stomach.

The post expressed her excitement and explained why she wanted to keep the first moments of her pregnancy away from the public. Since the post, Kardashian has openly discussed her pregnancy by answering fan questions on Twitter and posting her progress online.

With the public watching a celebrity’s every move, people forget celebrities have a personal life outside of tabloid media. People need to understand that, though celebrities are influencers to younger generations, it is their choice whether they want to keep information private, and we must respect that.
