The Northwestern University Wildcats Aug. 31 home opener was spoiled by the No. 12 ranked Marquette University Golden Eagles 2-0 at Lakeside Field, 2247 N. Campus Drive.

The Golden Eagles dominated time of possession the during entire first half and outshot the Wildcats 13 attempts to one. Marquette finally capitalized on an opportunity with 16 minutes remaining in the first half on a corner kick.

Senior midfielder Ally Miller scored with a sliding kick on the left side of an empty net following an assist from junior midfielder Maegan Kelly.

The Golden Eagles went on to outshoot the Wildcats 18-5 for the game.

“In the first half we conceded a lot of long distance shots and conceded a lot of possession,” said Michael Moynihan, head coach of the Wildcats.

Wildcats starters Niki Sebo, sophomore midfielder; Natalie Cikos freshman defender; and Anna Cassel sophomore goalkeeper, were unable to play because of injuries. Freshman Rachel Bergman started her first career game at goal in her team’s loss.

During the second half, with 18 minutes remaining in the match, senior midfielder Megan Jaskowiak put the game out of reach by getting her first goal of the year past Bergman with a line drive shot from 18 yards out.

“I thought we showed very well for ourselves,” Moynihan said. “We’re a young team, again without three starters. I thought we went toe-to-toe with a team that’s ranked No. 12 in the country.”

Following their victory over the Wildcats, the Golden Eagles have now outscored their opponents 10-0 through their first three games.

The Wildcats next four games will be played at Lakeside Field starting with the Colorado University Buffalo at 1 p.m. on Sept. 2.
