Update Feb. 23, 6 p.m.: Lambrini Lukidis, associate vice president of Strategic Communications and External Relations, confirmed the body found on the roof of the 618 S. Michigan Ave. building is not a Columbia student, employee or contractor.

A body found on the roof of a Columbia building has been identified as a 23-year-old Black male with an unknown address.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the deceased in a Tuesday email to the Chronicle.

A collegewide email sent Monday evening, Feb. 21 said an unidentified body was found on the lower rooftop of Columbia’s 618 S. Michigan Ave. building just before noon.

The Chronicle obtained the name of the deceased from the Medical Examiner’s office, but is waiting on verification from the Chicago Police Department and Columbia to release it. At this time, it is still unclear what relation, if any, the deceased has to the Columbia community.

In an email to the Chronicle Tuesday, Kellie Bartoli, a public information officer from the Chicago Police Department’s Office of News Affairs, said the incident occurred at approximately 11:54 Monday morning.

“An unidentified male in his 20s-30s was found unresponsive on the roof at the [600 block of S. Michigan],” Bartoli said in an email to the Chronicle. “The victim was pronounced [dead] on the scene.”

Bartoli said detectives are conducting a death investigation and that autopsy results are pending.

The Medical Examiner’s office has completed the autopsy but not released a cause of death.

The email from Columbia said the individual was discovered lying face down on the lower rooftop of the 618 S. Michigan Ave. building. The email also said as of that time, the college had no reports of a missing student, employee or contractor.

Lambrini Lukidis, associate vice president of Strategic Communications and External Relations, said in a Tuesday evening email to the Chronicle that the college had released all the information it could share and that the Chicago Police Department is investigating the matter.

Multiple police vehicles were parked on the 600 block of South Michigan Avenue Monday afternoon. Firefighter personnel were also seen exiting the alleyway behind the Michigan Avenue buildings, including Columbia’s 618 S. Michigan Ave. building.

The college has requested that anyone with any information about the incident contact CPD’s Area 3 Detective Division, using the reference ID “RD JF-151365.”

This is an ongoing story. The Chronicle will continue to update the campus community as new information is released.
