A collaborative effort between Opal Tometi, Pattrisse Cullors and Alicia Garza, the phrase “Black Lives Matter” erupted after the acquittal of George Zimmerman. Often referred to as the new civil rights movement, the Black Lives Matter movement calls for the solidarity and equality of all black people. The African-American Studies Department at the University of Illinois of Chicago hosted Garza April 5 at Student Center East, 750 S. Halsted St., to speak and host a Q&A.
