On summer days in Chicago, it’s hard to miss the sound of a drum beat, a saxophone melody or a song in the distance. Buskers, also known as street performers, take advantage of the clear weather and Chicago’s peak tourism season to perform on sidewalks, CTA platforms, bridges and more.
While some are performing for the first time, others, such as The Chicago Bucket Boys, are coming back to their regular spot, most popularly known for their drumming performances just outside the Art Institute of Chicago. Most performers set out a tip bucket, some now with QR codes for digital payment and often nod or smile when someone contributes. For them, it’s not just a transaction but a way to connect with the city’s busking community.
