Shantay Bolton, the college’s new president and CEO, is charting her first semester on campus, and is making a point to get to know the community she now leads.
From encouraging students to embrace curiosity to showing up in campus spaces, Bolton said she will be focused on building the relationships that will define her tenure. We sat down with her to talk about the start of the semester, the mentors who shaped her and how she hopes to make every student feel “seen, heard and valued.”
The Chronicle: As someone starting a new chapter at Columbia, what advice would you give first-year students feeling both excitement and nervous?
Bolton: “Those butterflies you’re feeling are completely normal. Excitement and nerves often show up together when you’re stepping into something big — and this is big. You’re beginning a journey that will challenge you, inspire you and shape who you’re becoming. Be curious. Try classes that light a spark, join organizations that feed your passions and spend time with people who see the world differently than you do. As a first-generation college student myself, I know the power of asking questions, finding mentors and using the resources around you. Every step you take here is a chance to learn, grow and discover your own voice.”
The Chronicle: What have students taught you about leadership and how will that shape how you engage with Columbia students?
Bolton: “Students have taught me that perspective is powerful, and listening — really listening — is everything. In my career, I’ve learned that students often spot challenges before anyone else and dream up solutions no one else has considered. They bring honesty, passion and a willingness to push boundaries. That has taught me to lead with humility and an open mind. At Columbia, I’ll approach every conversation with students as a learning opportunity. I want them to see me not just as their president but as an accessible partner in shaping the journey we’re on together.”
The Chronicle: How will you stay connected with students, and what’s the best way for them to reach you?
Bolton: “You’ll see me out and about — at performances, exhibitions and campus events and in the everyday spaces where students gather. I’ll be meeting with student leaders regularly, but I also want those unscripted moments: walking across campus, popping into classrooms or just stopping by a student lounge to say ‘hello.’ Students can reach me through my office email or via their student leadership channels, but I also welcome those spontaneous face-to-face connections. My goal is simple: for students to feel seen, heard and valued.”
The Chronicle: What is one thing you want the campus community to know about you?
Bolton: “My commitment to your success runs deep — not just in the classroom but in every part of who you are becoming. As a first-generation college graduate and former student-athlete, I understand discipline, resilience and the need for a strong support system. Those experiences shaped my values: hard work, teamwork and lifting others as we climb. Columbia’s mission to amplify creative voices resonates with me at my core, and I’m honored to join a community that thrives on bold ideas and a collaborative spirit.”
