0:47: So, my first tip is, before you even begin looking into getting an internship, schedule an
0:51: Appointment at the career center with a career advisor so they can look over potential options for you.
0:56: This means going over resume details, more on that in a bit, cover letters, and just general help surrounding any confusion.
1:02: I had the pleasure of talking with one of our warm and welcoming career advisors, Tom Joyce, who had this to say on the topic.
1:08: I tell this to students all the time is set up an appointment with a peer advisor or one of the career advisors to go over your resume.
1:17: Don’t be shy.
1:18: You know, we’re open Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 and we can really call from your description about what you’ve been doing.
1:25: Even if you don’t have any experience at all, I really believe we can get a one-page resume put together for you, working together in cohesion.
1:34: So let’s talk resumes.
1:36: My second tip is to take a look at Handshake.
1:38: If any of you have ever spent a deal of time trying to apply to campus jobs, you should be very familiar with the website Handshake.
1:45: Here you can look up both jobs and wow, internship opportunities.
1:49: While different internships might have different requirements for application, having a good cover letter and resume makes a huge difference.
1:55: So how should you go about this?
1:58: Going back to handshake, if you go to the career center tab, and hit resources, you can find a bunch of great templates for you to fill out.
2:04: But remember, the number one thing is, making sure that you have a second set of eyes on your materials, resume and cover letter and portfolio for that matter.
2:13: It’s important that you set yourself apart from the others in a positive way, and it’ll be a negative way if there’s typos and incorrect grammar used, etc.
2:24: So that’s where we can really help you out with that.
2:28: My final tip is understanding the different types of available internships here at Columbia and beyond.
2:33: For credit-bearing internships, you must have a 2.0 GPA, at least 30 completed credits and at least one semester finished if you’re a non-international student.
2:40: Columbia College Chicago additionally offers special programs like a semester in LA.
2:44: However, these programs are more selective and should be applied to much, much earlier.
2:48: If you’d prefer to stay on campus, there are internships available in areas such as the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Student Communications, Student Leadership, WCRX radio, external relations, and more.
