0:06: Welcome to Three to Know with the Columbia Chronicle, your go-to source for the top three things every Columbia College student, faculty and staff member needs to know.
0:14: I’m your host, Levi Libson.
0:17: Spring registration is right around the corner.
0:19: With the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives,
0:22: It can be a bit hard to slow down and take a minute to plan ahead.
0:25: As such, on today’s episode of Three to Know, I’ll be going over some ways to smoothen out this inherently complicated process and get you prepared for a fun and smooth semester.
0:35: My first tip is to plan your schedule ahead of time.
0:38: All Columbia students should have received an email with your planned registration date and time.
0:43: This information is important to keep track of so you don’t end up missing your window.
0:47: If this were to happen, it might be harder to get into the classes you want to attend.
0:52: Ahead of your registration date, you should make meetings with your advisor.
0:55: More on that later, to plan what classes you should take to meet certain requirements.
0:59: Knowing what classes you want prior to registration can help you avoid getting waitlisted.
1:04: A good way of doing this is asking your teachers what classes they are offering and then plotting out a fake schedule to see what times work best for you.
1:11: Allow yourself to be flexible with your schedule.
1:13: As long as you’re ahead of the curve, you can make all of this work for you.
1:17: If you happen to get waitlisted when registering, try emailing the instructor of that specific class to see if there’s a way they can create another opening.
1:24: If not, keep checking to see if anyone drops, allowing you to sneak your way in.
1:28: While we all have our eyes on fun electives, we ultimately are here with purpose and do have to consistently progress toward graduation.
1:35: So my second tip is to make sure you check progress toward your major before registering.
1:41: To ensure you meet the requirements to graduate, make sure to double-check your progress.
1:45: Go to the My Colum app, then hit the registration and student planning tile, and next select planning overview.
1:52: Hitting this will show you what is essentially a newer version of our previously used degree audit.
1:57: For anyone new to the system, here you can find information about the required subjects and credits you need to cover by graduation.
2:04: While each major has specific classes you need to take, you may be missing a general credit like a history class, or 200 level plus class or such and such.
2:12: Navigating this page can be a bit of a headache if you don’t know what you’re doing, which leads us into tip number three.
2:18: Plan a meeting with your adviser ahead of time.
2:20: Before getting into the nitty gritty, it’s best to schedule an appointment with the adviser of your specific concentration.
2:26: While technically you can make appointments with anyone, most advisors specify to a certain group of majors and tailor their help mostly toward people within their own category.
2:35: You can find your advisors through a simple web search.
2:38: However, I will break it down quickly for you here as well.
2:41: If you’re in the School of Fashion, you have Chris Garcia Peak, School of Theater and Dance, Gabriel Oladipo, School of Business, Jessica Horwitz, School of Communication, Brian Marth, NaBeela Jackson, or Tiara McGuire.
2:53: School of Film, Jill Sultz, School of Design, Kamillah Ong, School of Audio and Music, Ritch Barnes, School of Design, Yasmin Reynoso or Nathalia Martinez-Bliss.
3:03: And lastly, School of Visual Arts, Hannah Jensvold.
3:06: Try and schedule a meeting with these people as soon as you can.
3:09: They are pumped to help you out and to get you on the right path for graduation.
3:14: Subscribe to our newsletters on our website, columbiachronicle.com.
3:18: Be sure to also check out chonversations for weekly campus highlights.
3:22: I’m Levi Libson.
3:23: Thanks for listening.
