From campus history to contemporary issues, here are three art installations to visit on Columbia’s campus this month.
Transcript:
0:05: Welcome to Three To Know with the Columbia Chronicle, your go to source for the top three things every Columbia College student, faculty and staff member needs to know.
0:14: I’m your host, Levi Libson.
0:18: Whether you’re into modern art or just want a cool place to wander, galleries are a great way to spend an afternoon.
0:24: Luckily for you, here on campus are a variety of interesting curated galleries for you to explore.
0:30: In today’s episode, we’re gonna go over three unique galleries that are well worth a visit.
0:35: Our first gallery is “About Noon” by Alessandro Bo.
0:39: “About Noon” by Alessandro Bo explores gentrification and displacement in Mexico through the medium of amazing photography, video and collage.
0:47: This project mostly focuses on the Atoyac River in Oaxaca, Mexico and how its changing course is affecting both nature and neighborhood.
0:54: This exhibit is being displayed 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. during weekdays at the Glass Curtain gallery until September 19th, so go visit soon before it closes.
1:04: Switching now to something more physical, we have “Channeling body from image to viewer.”
1:09: “Channeling body from image to viewer” is an exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Photography located at 600 South Michigan Avenue.
1:17: This show brings together the works of 11 international artists who use body movement, posture, and gesture as a way of communicating connection to the viewer.
1:26: This exhibit explores how our bodies live in history and memory and how expressions, even as simple as crawling or kneeling, can evoke vulnerability, resistance, transition, or other deeper societal pressures.
1:37: In a time where so much of our existence is filtered through screens, it’s important to recognize how one’s physical self can be so powerful.
1:44: This curated gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
1:49: It’s impressive to imagine Columbia College Chicago being around for 135 years, but here we are.
1:55: 135 years in Art and Objects is an upcoming exhibit at the Hokin Gallery located at 623 South Wabash Avenue.
2:03: This show invites students, faculty, and staff to submit photos taken somewhere on campus that captures the spirit of our school.
2:10: These pictures will be printed and displayed, creating a collective reflection of the college’s history, identity, and lived experience.
2:16: Sadly, the deadline for submitting pictures has passed.
2:19: However, this show opens on the 25th of September and runs until November 18th, Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. I highly recommend giving this one a visit, as it’s an easily accessible collective project of all our highs and lows.
