Students talk about their registration experience for the spring semester and returning to campus in the freezing weather.
Transcript:
0:05: Welcome back to Chronversations.
0:07: I’m your host, Levi Libson.
0:11: Just like that, our break is over, and the busy semester is once again upon us.
0:15: For those returning students coming back from warm, beautiful vacations, bundle up.
0:20: For those who have been enduring the cold this whole time, I envy your strength.
0:25: This week’s episode is going to be relatively grounded and check-in focused.
0:29: I spoke with two students at our student center, Legacy Maynor and Brianna Monzo, asking them honestly how this first week has been going and how registration went.
0:38: Hello, my name is Brianna, and I’m a senior.
0:41: I am studying communications, and I’m minoring in social media digital strategies.
0:45: My name is Legacy, and I’m a senior here at Columbia College Chicago, and my major is illustration.
0:51: So to start, how was registration this last semester for you?
0:56: Were you able to get into all the classes that you wanted, you feel?
0:58: Yeah, I got into all the classes I pretty much wanted to do, even though I was worried at the beginning because I did register pretty late because of some other reasons. But, I did get in every class I met, wanted to get into, and the process of getting into those classes was great, especially with the new website that was brought up. It was very much helpful compared to when I first started here at Columbia, very much helpful.
1:18: I mean, to follow up with that, were you waitlisted in any classes at any point?
1:21: At one point, yes, I was, and then I later got reached out to. One of my classes was available, so eventually they do get back. If they don’t, then I just apply to another class and do some more research, but other than that, not that many problems.
1:36: I got into most of the classes I wanted to attend to.
1:38: I got that all figured out.
1:39: I was, I’m right now taking all the classes that I need, but it was a bit difficult since there was a bit of a switch up with advisors and just trying to see what classes to take and especially seeing if all the professors have availability too, for the amount of classes that students are taking.
1:59: What’s one piece of advice you would give newer students regarding registration and that whole process?
2:04: It gets easier as time goes by because I know technology is getting more advanced and then like, having the old system for so long, it was just like, wow, big change, and I think there’s more bigger changes that are gonna come along.
2:19: So, after going through a few days so far, is your schedule working out fine?
2:23: Do you like how it is?
2:25: Actually, yeah, I’ve been liking it.
2:27: I have all my classes, turned out. And went to a majority of them, and so far I’m really, really liking it right now.
2:36: Yeah, it’s working out pretty good, by being like, what, the third day? I’m pretty satisfied with what classes I’m in so far.
2:42: I’m just very excited for graduating this semester and getting through it.
2:46: The classes that I have attended so far, they seem fun, they seem great.
2:49: The assignment seemed great as well, the classmates, pretty excited for it.
2:54: With our school’s newly reworked system of registration, I was curious to hear feedback on what could potentially be changed for the future.
3:01: If there was anything that you would change about registration, what would it be?
3:04: There’s one thing.
3:05: I wish that instead of going to the official website of Columbia, that they listed if certain classes were repeatable inside the registration website, if that makes sense.
3:18: Yeah, like being able, if it’s repeatable or not, and stuff like that.
3:23: That’s pretty much it.
3:24: And just like that, we arrive at a final question, much lighter than the rest.
3:29: If there was one class you wish you could take, what would it be?
3:32: Probably like a beginner photography class, because recently, I discovered my love for photography recently by, you know, going out and just trying new hobbies. So I really wish that I did or was able to get into a photography class. Maybe being able to, you know, learn a couple things by me just starting to get into it, stuff like that.
3:52: And maybe also a fashion class as well because I took one last semester, but, wish I was able to do more, or I was able to tap into fashion more.
4:00: This semester I had to take random electives, so I chose the majority of it for like, that it would help me out with my career. But it would be nice to add, I don’t know, like an art class, fashion design, or like, fashion management would be one of them, I guess.
4:17: Make sure to stay up to date with campus and Metro news at Columbia Chronicle.com.
4:22: I’m Levi Libson.
4:23: Thanks for listening.
