State of the College Address 2012

Every year Warrick Carter, Columbia College Chicago’s President, gives a State of the College Address speech to address the student body about the progress of Columbia and the outlook for the future of the college. After the speech, students were able to engage in dialogue with Carter. Many of those who did questioned him about the prioritization process.

The Columbia Chronicle did not record (video) the entire event, this clip represents only a small portion of the State of the College Address sponsored by the Student Government Association.

This video does not reveal the tension in the room and the defensive attitude and bad behavior of President Carter. Here’s some more media if you want to hear and see what else happened:

If he hasn’t already, President Carter owes the students an apology for his behavior at this address. He also owes the staff and faculty an apology for treating them like naughty children who are upset about the Prioritization process. They are not idiots, it is obvious jobs will be lost and roles will be shuffled and that is scary no matter “what’s for the best.” Many elements of this process have happened long before this school year though. Many staff positions were cut incl in CCAP, an Asian Center was eliminated, and expensive consultants have been utilized at various junctures. What is Carter getting paid for if he wasn’t continually managing the school’s growth over the past ten years in a responsible manner? Isn’t that his job? Every department has to submit reports regularly. Maybe he should have taken the time to read them during his sudden 2 month “Sabbatical” last Summer…
Prioritization is just a more official way of “Spring Cleaning” in a way that appears to take the blame off Carter and it is a very corporate way of dealing with things. Columbia clearly needs improved structures, but Carter needn’t create an upsetting atmosphere by being rude. There is increased Security EVERYWHERE – outside Carter’s office, at Board meetings, and at these State of the College addresses. What is he so afraid of? If he’s worried that people will find out just how clueless, feckless, and belittling he is, it’s too late. I posted this as “Anonymous” because I’m scared too, and have no security.
