NBA: ‘Where amazing happens’
The Chicago Bulls pushed the first-round playoff series back to Boston for game seven after a triple-overtime thriller, winning 128 to 127, on April 30 at the United Center. The two teams established an NBA record for the most overtime games in a series with three, and the April 30 performance pushed it to four. The game ended with Derrick Rose’s block on point guard Rajon Rondo followed by a steal. Rose missed his last two free-throws, but the Bulls still prevailed, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Sheriff named one of most influential
TIME Magazine chose Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart as one of its 100 most influential people of 2009. Dart is known for filing a lawsuit against Craigslist.com, alleging  the popular website not only allows the solicitation of prostitution, but has actively created “the largest source of prostitution in America.” The magazine applauds Dart for his views and actions on foreclosure evictions, according to ABC7Chicago.com.

Swine Flu May Day march
Despite the H1N1 virus threat, also known as Swine Flu, thousands marched on May 1 for the annual May Day immigration rights march, an international celebration of workers’ rights, which has, in recent years, been used as a platform for immigration reform. Chicago police strongly urged organizers to cancel the march because of the virus threat, but citizens ignored the warnings. The Cinco de Mayo parade on May 5 at Navy Pier has been canceled due to the virus; the parade expected was to host 200 to 300 people from Mexico, where the virus is raging, according to CBS2Chicago.com.

CPS hires Obama relative
The new leader of security at Chicago Public Schools is Michelle Obama’s cousin. Andres Durbak, director of security for nearly a decade, will be succeeded by Michael Shields, a 21-year Chicago Police Department veteran, whom Supt. Jody Weis promoted on his arrival, only to demote him months later. CEO Ron Huberman said Shields brings critical law enforcement skills, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
