Street cameras to catch uninsured?
Street cameras in Chicago might have another function soon. The cameras, which are already used to capture speeding and crime, might start checking for car insurance, too, according to ABC7.com. Alderman Ed Burke (14th Ward) supports the new camera function and said he thinks the city could use these additional tickets toward Chicago’s budget deficit, according to the Chicago Tribune. InsureNet, a Michigan-based company, presented the idea to city council on March 16. Insurance companies would also have to participate in the program, and fines for getting caught driving without insurance could cost up to $500, according to ABC7.com.

Park district and Soldier Field sued
Soldier Field’s janitorial company, We’re Cleaning, has been run by Yvonne McGinnis for the past 15 years. McGinnis is suing the Chicago Park District, Soldier Field’s management company and another janitorial company for conspiring to remove her company from their job at Soldier Field, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Elzie Higgenbottom, who runs Higgenbottom’s East Lake Management Services Corp., was given the job McGinnis’ company had because of ITS “generous donations” to the Democratic Party, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. McGinnis also said her work is done much cheaper than Higgenbottom’s company.

Great Lakes evaporating
Congressman Mark Kirk expressed concern for the low levels of water in the Great Lakes, particularly Lake Michigan, according to ABC7.com. The Army Corps of Engineers recently reported the water level of Lake Michigan is a foot below average. Kirk said the lowered level is caused by the 30 percent decrease in lake ice coverage in the past 36 years due to climate change. With less ice on the surface, there is more opportunity for water to evaporate, according to ABC7.com. Kirk said he wants a new bill to be amended that offers a look at climate change in regard to the Great Lakes.

Lacrosse at Soldier Field
The Chicago Machine, a local lacrosse team, will host two games at Soldier Field, according to The Daily Herald. The team’s home opener and final game will be played at Soldier Field on May 30 and Aug. 8. This is the first time lacrosse will be played at the field. The team hopes this exposure will bring more fans to lacrosse, according to The Daily Herald. The Chicago Machine is a major league lacrosse team that plays its other games in various suburban locations.
