Junior fiction writing major Rachel Fink-Sigler

Even though the year is coming to a close and a new one is on the horizon, fashion seems to be taking a few steps back and is looking to the past for inspiration-destination 1990.

Channeling grunge rock band Nirvana, junior fiction writing major Rachel Fink-Sigler was spotted outside the 33 E. Congress Parkway Building sporting a blue and green plaid button-up.

Robert Bykowski THE CHRONICLE
Fink-Sigler isn’t the only one reverting to grunge. Fashion designers Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and Dolce & Gabbana all incorporated the Seattle staple-plaid-into their fall ready-to-wear runway looks.

“I like to layer and put different patterns together,” Fink-Sigler said.

Her plaid patterned shirt was paired with black Converse shoes, high-waisted skinny jeans by Nudie and a black belle-curved cinched-waist jacket by Donna Karan.

“I’d say my style is a mix between grunge and high fashion,” Fink-Sigler said.

One of her favorite designers, Marc Jacobs, would agree. For his fall ready-to-wear line, he designed a mini three-quarter black and white plaid dress that is cinched at the waist with a belt and paired with black tights, which gives a fresh new look to an old favorite.

Fink-Sigler’s shape was accentuated by her cinched waist coat but alternatively could have been belted.

Whether the pattern is plaid, gingham or tartan, rock it with pride. Experiment with the pattern by adding accessories and changing the silhouette. Keep the ensemble simple and clean, pairing it with skinny jeans or tights.

Grunge rock may be over and Seattle may be 2,000 miles away, but plaid is here to stay.
